To work as a licensed security guard, it’s essential to get a valid security guard registration or a screen-print BSIS’s approval and a current photo ID.
Security guards are employed by licensed private patrol operators to protect people and/or property and prevent theft.

Security Guard Training Resources

1. Be at least 18 years old to apply for a security guard license through the BSIS
2. Undergo a criminal history background check through the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
3. Pass a 40 hour security guard training course that broken down over the following time periods (in a table >)

The security guard application and fingerprinting process is easily completed by taking the following five steps:

1. The security guard must have completed the eight-hour Power to Arrest training and passed the exam
2. Applicant must submit the security guard application online at http://www.dca.ca.gov/bsis/online_servi … ing.shtml.
   
3. The security guard applicant must submit fingerprints electronically using Live Scan. See the Live Scan form in the resources section.
   
4. Once the Bureau has received the online application and criminal history clearances, the cleared security guard will appear on the Bureau’s Web site. The security guard can verify the approval by checking the Bureau’s “Verify a License” at http://www.bsis.ca.gov/online_services/ … nse.shtml.
   Once the security guard registration has been cleared, a screen-shot from the Web site can be used as a temporary security guard registration. The security guard can then be on the job. Official security guard registration will be mailed to the applicant and should be received in 10 to 15 business days.
5. Security guards placed on a job must have the following documents in their possession:1. A valid security guard registration or a screen print of the Bureau’s approval2. A valid photo ID
